Cultural Context

Cultural Context in Therapy

Mental health in many South Asian communities carries a weight that's hard to explain to someone who hasn't lived it. There's the pressure to succeed academically, professionally, and financially, and to do so for the family, not just yourself. There's the expectation to manage emotions privately, to not show weakness, and definitely not to talk to a stranger about your problems.

For South Asian men specifically, these pressures compound. The cultural expectation to be strong, to provide, and to not need help, combined with navigating the demands of career, relationships, and identity across two cultures, creates a very particular kind of strain.

Effective therapy for South Asian clients doesn't ignore this context. It engages with it directly. You shouldn't need to spend your session explaining your family dynamics or cultural background before you can get to the actual work.
